According to a revised report issued by many government agencies, all people who are exposed to formaldehyde in some laminate flooring could be undergoing adverse health effects. It was also found by the revised report which was released last month that lifetime cancer risk from the laminate flooring was higher than identified in the main version of the report.
The issues are specific to laminate flooring that is sold by Lumber Liquidators and produced in China, said the report which was issued at the U.S. Centers by the National Center for Environmental Health for Disease Control and Prevention and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. Lumber Liquidators is a Toano, Virginia based company which claims to be the “biggest specialty retailer of hardwood flooring in North America.”
According to Lumber Liquidators, they stopped selling the products the previous year.
Why is some laminate flooring dangerous?
Last month, the ATSDR and CDC said it was concluded by the revised report that problems in breathing and irritation could occur in anyone who is exposed to formaldehyde in the tested laminate flooring.
- Estimated Lifetime cancer risk could increase from breathing highest levels of formaldehyde from the affected laminate flooring.
- Breathing Problems
The CDC also said the American Cancer Society estimates that up to half of the total people, 50,000 of every 100,000 may develop cancer over their lifetime from all causes.
Formaldehyde is a reactive gas that is colorless and is used in many products, including hair and fingernail, furniture and flooring, according to the Consumer Product and Safety Commission. Formaldehyde is mostly used to bind fibers or wood chips into plywood – it is found in glue and resins.
Dr. Genevieve Brauning, who is a family practitioner with Novant Health in Charlotte, North Carolina, says exposure to formaldehyde can cause wheezing, coughing, and asthma-like symptoms.
Formaldehyde has even been classified as a toxic air contaminant by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) because it can cause adverse health effects.
Advice if you have the affected flooring
If you are experiencing eye irritation or breathing difficulty, then please seek medical attention. You should look for different flooring options as well, such as, carpeting, ceramic tile, hardwood, natural linoleum, Eco-friendly green, vinyl, or stone. If you live in New Jersey and want safe and healthy floor installation then you call Enedix flooring NJ. Bring only the materials that are not toxic to your health. Something that will literally stay with you in your home should be formaldehyde free.
Having a nice hardwood floor is always a great thing. But how do you keep your hardwood floors as clean as when Enedix Flooring laid them in your home? The answer to keeping your hardwood floors looking like new is very simple. There are several different steps to help you maintain your flooring. The first step is the basic cleaning. You begin this by running a cloth over your floor that has been treated with some form of a dusting agent. This allows you to pick up any dust or dirt that may be on your floor. For a more thorough cleaning, you can use a vacuum cleaner with a floor-brush attachment. Only use this type of attachment since some of the others may scratch your floor. For any deeper cleaning, there is a separate process that you can follow. This is to help remove the oil and daily grime that will build up on your floor. For this type of cleaning you will use a wood-cleaning product. Make sure you follow the instructions for preparing your mixture. Make sure that whatever you mop with is only damp and is not dripping wet. After using the mixture, mop with clean water if required by your cleaning product. Go over the room and make sure to get up an excess liquid to keep from damaging your floor. There are some tricks that you can use if you have some stubborn marks to get up and your floor has a soft-oil finish. Steel wool and floor wax are useful in trying to remove dark spots, pet stains, heel marks, water marks or white stains. For any oil-based stains there is a separate process to clean these up. You will start by rubbing the area with a soft cloth and dishwashing detergent (the kind for the sink and not for the dishwasher). Rinse the area with clear water. Repeat this as needed and let the area dry. Once it is dry, use sandpaper to finish the area you worked on. These are just some of the basic steps you can take to help keep up the maintenance on your hardwood flooring. You can always do additional maintenance on your floor to keep it to the level of clean that you want to maintain but these steps are great places to start. If you can clean the floor for the basic cleaning at least once a week than everything else is just basic maintenance and will be no problem for you.
